Baby Spinach Black Berry Protein Smoothie

Baby Spinach Black Berry Protein Smoothie

One of the best and easiest ways to kick start your day is by having a nice and delicious green smoothie first thing in the morning. Here we have a Baby Spinach Black Berry Protein Smoothie recipe that requires to just blend a bunch of greens with other tasty ingredients to have a nutritious, loaded with protein and delicious breakfast.

Green smoothies can be tricky, sometimes they can be TOO green and not have a pleasant flavour. I do have to say that personally, I do like the grassy flavour of spinach in a smoothie or in anything that's green and fresh, so the grassy flavour is definitely present but the berries in it balance it out nicely.

I really like this recipe because of how refreshing it is, and by adding frozen berries it becomes a great summer snack. It's also quite light but by adding porridge oats into the mix we are getting some complex carbs that will keep you energised and satiated for a few hours.

We all know how good green leafy vegetables are for you, they are one of the most concentrated source of nutrition. They have an enormous amount of vitamins and minerals such as Iron, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Vitamin K, C, E and many of the complex B vitamins. They are loaded with fiber, phytonutrients and have very few, if any, calories.

Spinach is probably the leafy green vegetable I recur to the most when making smoothies, it can be eaten raw, it is affordable, it has a more subtle flavour than other vegetables of its kind and it blends really well considering the amount of fiber it has, unlike other veggies like kale which leave chunky bits and pieces in your smoothie.

Whenever I make a smoothie with spinach I try to add berries to it, the reason being that even though spinach is an excellent source of Iron, you need to properly absorb it to reap its benefits. Eating Vitamin C at the same time increases it's absorption significantly, and berries are a great source of it.

But, why do we need Iron?

Iron is super important for your overall health, this mineral is needed to make hemoglobin, which is the protein in red cells in your blood, it's in charge of carrying oxygen throughout your body for it to work effectively.

When we are experiencing Iron deficiency we can become anemic, there's a constant feeling of tiredness, you can experience shortness of breath, headaches and dizziness, you become pale and it might show on your skin and your hair, both become very dry and eventually you can start loosing hair because of the damage caused.

As you can see, this smoothie is a great recipe to get that intake of nutrients you need to be energised and sharp during the day. You're also getting loads of antioxidants and protein, which makes this smoothie a great breakfast option or a nice refreshing snack in the middle of the day.
