We love to put a whole meal in a single bowl. And, in my eyes, the easiest and one of the best ways is by making a super yummy Vegan Poke Bowl. How good it is to have so much flavour and cover all nutritional your needs with a single dish?
In recent years poke bowls have become a fad, but this is one of the good fads. The type of trends we are happy and grateful to have stumbled upon and the type we don't want to ever go away.
And even though Poke bowls have gained a lot of popularity from a few years back they have been around in Hawaiian culture for a very long time. And when I say a very long time, I mean veeeery long. The origin of this dish dates from pre-contact times.
Back in the day, Poke was much more simple than what we see today at a local Poke shop. In ancient times, it used to be a dish made with fish, seaweed, and crushed inamona. Inamona is a condiment used in traditional Hawaiian cuisine made with roasted kaki nuts and salt.
As you can see, the concept was very simple. But as other cultures started arriving on the island, many different elements were added and changed. And as many dished that have been on the radar for so long and are part of the culture, families, and individuals give it their one little touch.
We are grateful that this traditional meal has made its way around the world. As well as having vegan poke bowl options that come in many different forms. For this reason, I wanted to make my own vegan bowl that I could share with you so you can make it at home at any given time.
The vegan poke bowl we are about to make has three main elements. We have the rice, all the bits and pieces (a.k.a. veggies) we are throwing on top, and a delicious spicy mayo to seal the deal. All these layers are loaded with flavour and nutrients to make an incredibly whole food bowl.
One of my main struggles here was to recreate the taste of fish. I like to call it the taste of the ocean. I added seaweed to the rice while cooking it. This will infuse the rise so the flavour will be much better than simply sprinkling the nori on top.
Also, Nori is a highly nutritious food. It is loaded with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, a heap of antioxidants. And it's really good at supporting your gut health. These are just a few benefits but it's such a nutrient-dense plant-based ingredient that is a great addition to your diet.
The beauty of poke bowls is that we simply pile everything in a bowl. I like to drizzle the spicy mayo at the end. And you can add as little or as much as you need of this. But for sure, you'll absolutely love this delicious vegan poke bowl!
